Mould & black grout in your bathroom? Here's how to get rid of it for good

“I just can’t get the black grout in our shower clean anymore, what now?” It’s one of the most common frustrations people tell us about. You scrub, you bleach, and after a few weeks, that grubby edge is back again.

I’m Dieter Provoost, Managing Director of Voegloze Badkamer. In this blog, I’ll explain why grout lines remain a recurring problem and how you can get rid of them structurally (i.e., permanently).

Why grout turns black & gets mouldy

Grout is porous. It absorbs moisture, and in a bathroom, moisture is always present. In that damp, porous grout, limescale and mould find the ideal breeding ground. The older the grout, the more micro-cracks appear, allowing dirt and mould to penetrate deeper until no product can truly reach it anymore.

In other words, grout is the weak link in any tiled bathroom. Not because you clean poorly, but because that’s simply how the material works.

Why scrubbing & bleaching only help temporarily

Bleach and mould cleaners primarily tackle the surface colour, but the mould itself sits deeper within the porous grout. You see the dirt disappear for a moment, but the cause remains. Moreover, aggressive products further damage the grout over time, causing the problem to return even faster. It’s like trying to mop up a flood with the tap still running.

The core of the problem

As long as there are grout lines, there will be a porous spot where moisture and mould can settle. The only structural solution is to remove those grout lines.

The structural solution

With a Voegloze Badkamer, we replace all tiles and grout with one continuous, seamless finish. This is 100% waterproof and non-porous: there is simply no grout line for mould or black residue to cling to. The floor, walls, and shower become one smooth, hygienic surface that you can wipe clean in minutes.

Reclaim precious (free) time

This is what truly matters to us. A bathroom you no longer have to scrub is not only more beautiful and hygienic, it gives you time back. That’s our vision: by reducing maintenance to a minimum, you reclaim a little bit of your time every week, for the things that truly matter.

Hygienic

No porous grout, so no breeding ground for mould

Quick to clean

Wipe one surface instead of scrubbing grout

Durable

The fibreglass-reinforced finish remains waterproof and crack-free for years

Can it go over my existing tiles?

Often, yes. If your substrate is stable, we can usually apply our seamless finish directly over the existing tiles without breaking everything out, with minimal dust and waste.

You can read more about how such a renovation proceeds in our blog on shower renovation.

We also offer tailored maintenance products for daily cleaning.
